Crysis 3 sees Prophet discovering that New York has been encased in a 'Nanodome' by the Cell Corporation.
The dome has created a natural environment within the city, adding a rainforest, swamplands and rivers, as well as seven distinct locations named the Seven Wonders.
The game's creative director Rasmus Hoejengaard told Digital Spy that the return to New York was not an attempt to "cut corners or reuse assets", but to create a stronger emotional impact for both returning players and Americans.
Rumours have suggested that a Wii U version of Crysis 3 may be in development, though nothing official has been announced.
Crysis 3 is scheduled to release on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC in February 2013.
